To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov'd by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay;
The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere,
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
~Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672)
Anne Bradstreet was an English-American writer, the first notable American poet, and the first woman to be published in Colonial America. She was a well-educated woman for her time, being tutored in history, several languages, and literature.
At the age of sixteen she married Simon Bradstreet, who later to served as governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1630, Anne, Simon and her parents immigrated to America as part of the Winthrop Fleet of Puritan emigrants.
Much of Bradstreet's poetry is based on observation of the world around her, focusing heavily on domestic and religious themes.
