The Road Not Taken

The Road Not Taken is a very popular poem written by the well-known American poet, Robert Frost.

This poem of encouragement and hope speaks of making the decision of whether to take the "easy path" in life, where you coast along without too many "roadblocks" falling in your way. On the other hand, this easy path can also lead to mediocrity in life.

By journeying down the path that many people would not choose to go, you will often receive much greater rewards... perhaps be able to live a better lifestyle, get recognition for your ideas and contributions to society, earn more money, and most importantly, develop a deeper sense of purpose in your life along with inner spiritual growth.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Frost was a famous and popular American poet and the recipient of 4 Pulitzer Awards.

He frequently wrote about the rural life in New England in the early 1900's using the setting to examine complex social and philosophical themes.

The poem "The Road Not Taken" is one of his most popular and meaningful poetic verses.
