O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose

"A Red, Red Rose" is a 1794 Scottish song written by Robert Burns and is also often titled "My Love is Like A Red, Red Rose". It was said that he wrote the lyrics down when he heard a young country girl singing the tune.

O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose
by Robert Burns

O my luve's like a red, red rose.
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve's like a melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will love thee still, my Dear,
Till a'the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my Dear,
While the sands o'life shall run.

And fare thee weel my only Luve!
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile!

~Robert Burns (1759 - 1796)

Burns was a Scottish poet and a lyricist, who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

Born at Alloway, near Ayr, Scotland, he was the eldest of the seven children and received most of his education from his father, who taught his children reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, and history. He spent time working on a farm at Mt. Oliphant from 1766 to 1777, and then on a farm at Lochlea from 1777 until 1784.

During this time there was a period of loose living and bad choices in companionship. In 1781 Burns became a Freemason at Lodge St David, Tarbolton. At the death of his father in 1784, he and his brother Gilbert rented the Mossgiel farm near Mauchline, where many of his best poems were written.

In 1788 Burns married Jean Armour who had bore him twins before the marriage. She bore him nine children in total, but only three survived infancy. During a rift in their marriage, Burns began an affair with Mary Campbell (1763-1786), to whom he dedicated the poems "The Highland Lassie O," "Highland Mary" and "To Mary in Heaven." Not only did Burns write poetry, he also wrote many popular songs as well.
