Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

The peace Prayer of St. Francis is a popular verse to recite when praying for peace and guidance on how to live your life with love, goodness and understanding for all.

The Prayer of Saint Francis is a Christian prayer attributed to the 13th-century saint Francis of Assisi. However, the prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in France in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell) as an anonymous prayer.

The prayer has been known in the United States since 1936. Cardinal Francis Spellman and Senator Hawkes distributed millions of copies of the prayer during and just after World War II.

Peace Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Born Giovanni Francesco Bernardone, St. Francis was a Catholic deacon and the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans. He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy, and it is customary for Catholic churches to hold ceremonies honoring animals around his feast day on October 4th of each year.

This is the Peace Prayer of St. Francis version found in Chapter 11 of a book published by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. ("Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions"):

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me bring your love,
Where there is injury your pardon Lord,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope,
Where there is darkness, only light,
And where there's sadness, ever joy.

O Master grant that I may never seek,
So much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all men that we receive
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.
