When it comes to inspirational life poems, this great New Year's piece belongs almost as well to every day in the year, since it expresses a social ideal of justice and happiness.
Ring Out, Wild Bells
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring in the valiant man and free,
~Alfred Tennyson (1809 - 1892) 1st Baron Tennyson was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and is one of the most popular English poets. Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although One of Tennyson's most famous works is Idylls of the King (1885), a series of narrative poems based entirely on King Arthur and the Arthurian tales. The work was dedicated to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. During his career, Lord Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success even in his lifetime.
