Danish Proverbs
Wise Sayings

Denmark, where these Danish proverbs originate, is a country in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe and is located in the southernmost area of the Nordic countries.

Surveys conducted in 2006 and 2007 show that Denmark was ranked as "the happiest place in the world," which are based on standards of health, welfare, and education. It certainly seems to be a fine place to live!

Here is a little bit of trivia:

Hans Christian Andersen, who is well-known for his fairy tales, such as The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, and The Ugly Duckling, was from Denmark.

I hope you enjoy reading the following Danish proverbs as they hold true to life experiences, as well as the lessons that we see and learn when speaking of human nature.

Enjoy These Danish Proverbs

One bird in your hand is better than ten on the roof.

Meaning: We often say: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." It means that it's better to have a small amount of something that is a sure thing, than to covet a larger amount that is uncertain.

Too many cooks spoil the meal.

Meaning: If you ask everyone for their opinion, they will give it to you... which causes confusion.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the mountain.

Meaning: If you always envy what someone else has, you can never be satisfied or grateful for what you have already received. When in a constant state of envy, even if you get what you desired, you'll immediately be looking at and wanting something better.

Don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house.

Meaning: Don't criticize people for something you are guilty of as well.

Above the clouds, the sky is always blue.

Meaning: Even when things look the darkest, there will eventually be a break and things will get better. The clouds are only temporary.

Don't skin the bear before it's been shot.

Meaning: There's a difference between planning to do something and actually doing it. Don't get ahead of yourself.

Do not hide your light under a bushel.

Meaning: Everyone is special and each has their own unique talents. Let yours shine through... don't hide them.
