In this piece of friendship poetry, we can see that sometimes we can have a friend whom we have a relationship with that is so close that it is almost as if they share the same soul. Most of us have several friends, but we usually only have one or two best friends. This poem is about that extra-special relationship.
A Friend
Life offers no joy like a friend;
Yet more than thy friend unto thee,
Love mocks thee, whose mounting desire
A friend! Deep is calling to deep!
O heart wherein all hearts are known, ~Lucy Larcom (1824 - 1893) Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the ninth child in a family of ten children. At the age of 11, her family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts. For the next 10 years, until the age of 21, Lucy worked in the cotton mills, which is when she wrote many of her songs, poems, and letters describing her life.
